I have a solopreneur friend who has 47 AI tools bookmarked. Forty-seven. He uses two. Barely.
Last week, he sent me a link to Hermes Agent by Nous Research — a fairly robust AI agent system — asking: 'Think it's worth it?'
My answer: 'To do what, exactly?'
Radio silence.
That's THE problem. We don't lack AI tools. We lack a method to decide which ones deserve our hours — the only non-renewable resource a solo has.
Hermes Agent, like many recent AI tools, is technically impressive. Autonomous agents that can chain actions, reason, use external tools. The demo looks amazing. But a demo is a dish photographed for Instagram. Perfect lighting, studied angle, flawless plating. You don't know if it tastes good. You don't know if you can reproduce it in your 8m² kitchen. I've seen solopreneurs lose entire weeks configuring AI agent systems to automate tasks they could have done in 20 minutes by hand. The real cost is never the subscription — it's the integration time, the learning curve, and the silent maintenance that accumulates. Personal rule: if I can't test an AI tool on a real problem in my business in under 2 hours, the tool isn't for me today. Maybe tomorrow. Not today.
Here's what I use. Not a 15-criteria decision matrix. Four questions, in order. 1. What dish am I cooking? Identify ONE concrete process in your business that costs you time or money. Not 'automate my marketing.' Rather 'write the 5 follow-up emails for prospects who haven't responded in 7 days.' The more specific, the more honest the test. 2. Does this ingredient fit my kitchen? Practical questions: does the tool work with my current data? Can I plug it in without rebuilding my entire stack? For Hermes Agent, that means: do I have the infrastructure to run agents, or will I need to learn Docker, APIs, and advanced prompt engineering all at once? If the answer is 'I need to learn 3 things before I can even test' — it's not a tool, it's a project. And a project gets budgeted differently. 3. Is the dish better? Run the test. Time it. Compare the result with your current method. Not on 100 cases — on ONE real case. A solo's ROI is measured in hours recovered per week, not in theoretical efficiency percentages. 4. Would I make this dish again tomorrow? The killer question. Because a tool can work once and be unsustainable daily. If keeping it running takes more energy than it saves — it's a gadget, not a tool.
A point that AI enthusiasts systematically dodge: security. When you use an AI agent like Hermes, you potentially give it access to your client data, internal processes, strategic documents. An autonomous agent that 'chains actions' can also chain errors — and errors with sensitive data can't be undone. My rule: never give an AI tool more access than I'd give an intern on day one. Sandbox environment. Test data. No direct connection to the client database. This isn't paranoia. It's good entrepreneurial sense. GDPR doesn't distinguish between 'a human leaked your data' and 'an AI agent I misconfigured did.' The liability is always yours.
If I had to really answer my solopreneur friend with his 47 bookmarks, here's what I'd tell him: Hermes Agent is probably too complex for you today. Not because you're incompetent — but because you haven't yet exhausted the potential of simple tools. You're using ChatGPT at 10% of its capabilities, you have no Zapier/Make automation in place, and you're still writing your business proposals by hand. Before looking at autonomous agents, master basic assistants. Before wanting a robotic sous-chef, learn to use your knife properly. The most profitable AI for a solopreneur isn't the most powerful one. It's the one that removes the most costly friction in their day. And that friction is rarely where you think it is. Stop collecting. Start cooking.
